Closed As botanists traveled the world in the 18th and 19th centuries, using the newly created Linnæan classification system to scientifically define their discoveries, several symbolic languages emerged, matching flowers with meanings. These languages became a way to understand flowers in terms of sentiment, feeling and association. This exhibition explores the origins and impact these dueling languages had in Europe and America. It examines how understanding flowers spoke to many larger issues that defined the time.   Example – The common dandelion: Taraxacum officinale A plant that can symbolize both faithfulness and coquetry. These are some of the names and languages Europeans and Americans used to define this single specimen, which was native to Europe, Asia and parts of Northern Africa. It was purposefully cultivated in the Americas and later became seen as an iconic weed.
